Ingredients For Masoor Pulao

  • Rice - 2 cups
  • Whole Masoor / Lentil - 1 cup
  • Potato diced , green peas or any veggie of your choice - 1/2 cup
  • haldi / turmeric powder - 1 Tsp
  • Red Chilli powder - 1/2 Tsp - Optional
  • Biryani masala or garam masala - 2 Tsp
  • Hing / Asafoetida - 1/2 Tsp
  • Mohri / Black Mustard Seeds - 1 TSP
  • Jerra / Cumin seeds - 1 Tsp
  • finely chopped onion - 1/2 cup
  • finely chopped tomatoes - 1
  • Oil - 1 TBSP
  • Water - 4 cups
  • Salt to taste

Method For Preparing Masoor Pulao

  1. Heat a pan with oil.
  2. Once the oil is hot, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and hing.
  3. When the mustard seeds start to splutter, add diced onions and saut until golden brown.
  4. Add chopped tomatoes and saut until they become mushy.
  5. Add your choice of vegetables and soaked masoor dal, and stir everything well.
  6. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, and biryani masala or garam masala.
  7. Add soaked and drained basmati rice to the pan and stir gently.
  8. Add enough water to cover the rice and vegetables, and mix well.
  9. Let the pulao cook on medium to low flame for 15-20 minutes, or alternatively, use a pressure cooker and cook for 2 whistles.
  10. Fluff up the pulao with a fork and serve hot with your choice of raita, hot tomato soup, or enjoy on its own.

Tips :

  1. For people not consuming rice for various reasons , you can substitute rice with Daliya or cracked wheat.
  2. This is good recipe to try in instapot or pressure cooker.
